» free image hosts how come when I post a picture from your site, I get this graphic? What is direct linking? Direct/hot linking is linking the URL of a photo from a site that is not your own. You are infact, using someone else's resources. Resources cost money. In other words, you are stealing their money. The reason direct linking is forbidden is that these fansites and personal photo galleries are here as a generous contribution to fans. They fork out actual money to run these sites without a word from you. By direct linking to their images, you are using their bandwidth. And using their bandwidth means it is costing them more money than usual. If that happens and money runs out, they will close down these sites. It is considered rude if you direct link to them. Definitely not a way to thank the person who is spending time and money to give you a top notch fansite of your favorite actor. So, please. Save the image to your own site and direct link it from there. You should also not direct link to press places like Getty Images or even Yahoo. You may think that since they are making loads of money, they won't notice a few people direct linking, then you are wrong. Not only does it leave a copyright infringement trail to you, after a while, they may just remove the right for you to preview images in more than a thumbnail. Rex Features is one such example. how can I post a picture so that graphic will not show up? First, you need a place to host your images. A host that is able to post images. Here are some suggested free places that work (at least for the time being). If you know of anymore, tell me, please. Links updated March 27, 2007 permanent hosts
